Talking about Desktop fabricator may kick-start home revolution – tech – 09 January 2007 – New Scientist Tech

The next REALLY big thing coming out of the tech industry.  Think of it like a printer but one that creates 3-D objects.  So you could tell your computer to print out a new coffee mug.

Someday everybody will have one or two of these in their house and office.  It changes everything.  For example, it doesn’t matter what country the manufacturing jobs went to, because 80% of them are replaced by this technology.   Shipping companies will become niche players because between the home version and perhaps the one at the mall, everything will be created locally.  Rather than having to return broken products, the manufacturer will just “print” out what is needed at the customer’s home.
